Dear Swansea Elementary Families,
As you may be aware, the Colorado Department of Transportation selected Kiewit Meridiam Partners to build the I-70 expansion project (Central 70). For the last two years, efforts have been taken to reduce the impact of noise and dust on the Swansea campus before construction begins. This includes relocating and reconstructing our playground, adding building improvements to our school and building a 12-foot tall safety and art fence.
As construction teams were digging to start work on the fence, they uncovered the foundation of an old building. It is a former DPS facility that was demolished approximately 43 years ago. Due to the age of the foundation, some residual material containing asbestos was found.
In order to ensure everyone’s safety, Kiewit Meridiam Partners will conduct the asbestos removal in accordance with the approved Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment site specific work plan and all applicable State and Federal regulations. All asbestos removal activities will be monitored full-time by a third-party certified and licensed environmental consultant. The monitoring includes, but is not limited to, pre-abatement inspection, daily oversight, daily air sampling during asbestos removal, and final inspection at the completion of the asbestos removal activities.
Asbestos removal work will begin in early August and will be completed before the start of school. Removal of the asbestos materials is a strongly regulated and necessary task. Kiewit Meridiam Partners is following all necessary requirements to ensure everyone’s safety.
The DPS environmental team is working closely with Kiewit to confirm all standards and regulatory requirements are followed.
Please know that safety is our top priority. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Joni Rix with the DPS Environmental Team at 720-423-1903, Joni_Rix@dpsk12.org.
