Letter Regarding Asbestos Abatement at Swansea Construction Site

Posted: Oct 07, 2018

Oct. 5, 2018

In August, Principal Munoz sent a letter to families explaining that, as construction teams started work on the art fence near Swansea, they uncovered the foundation of an old building. It was a former Denver Public Schools (DPS) facility demolished 43 years ago. Due to its age, it contained some residual material containing asbestos. Asbestos removal work began in early August. It was scheduled to be completed before the start of school. This work is still ongoing.

We recently learned that asbestos-containing building materials used in the construction of the historic building are still present and are mixed in with other building debris and soil. Beginning on Monday, Oct. 8 and ending on Friday, Oct. 19, the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) and its subcontractors will perform asbestos abatement and excavation work. It will take place on the portion of the historic facility to the south of the art fence.

CDOT maintains control of the property to the south of the art fence and has full direction over the construction activities in this area. CDOT is coordinating with qualified environmental subcontractors as well as the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE). CDOT has developed a plan to remove the materials and soil, while maintaining strict compliance with all regulations and ensuring public health and safety. All abatement and excavation of the asbestos-containing materials and contaminated soils will be done under close supervision and a CDPHE-approved permit and work plan.

Please be assured that the safety and security of our students and staff is our top priority, and all measures are being taken to ensure their safety. DPS Environmental Services has reviewed the work plan and permit for the abatement and excavation in this area.

Thank you for your support in keeping our students safe. If you have any questions or concerns regarding this work, please contact DPS Environmental Services. We are happy to respond to questions regarding this phase of the construction near Swansea.
